Reignac-sur-Indre, Loire, France €380.000
  • Romantic watermill located in the heart of the Loire valley- château country, this stunning and unique 3 storey, 4 bedroom home has many wonderful features and sits in the most beautiful location, an absolute must see!
VR Estates are delighted to offer for sale this most beautiful property, a former watermill which has been lovingly converted into a 4 bedroom home, retaining original features and full of character, creating a unique and very special home.

The 3 storey watermill is built of tufa, the local white stone and sits in a gorgeous setting of lush green gardens with mature trees including an enormous weeping willow reflected in the mill lade, two waterfalls surrounding a shady island and a newly built swimming pool.
The mill which, unusually still has its wheel and connected interior mechanism, has been converted so well that every feature of the old mill has been incorporated into the home to make it a most interesting and unique living space.

The mill building is entered across a little bridge over the lower mill lade. The comfortable, light sitting room has a large chimney-piece which can be used open or closed. In the dining room/kitchen, behind a curved transparent screen, is the mill mechanism.
The mill stones, although no longer connected to the mechanism, are still in place in the large salon on the first floor. There are also two bedrooms on this level, a shower room and WC, and a spectacular veranda with views on three sides, looking out over the upper mill lade.
One would almost think that it flowed into the veranda, but at the last moment it cuts away towards the mill wheel. The original wooden miller's stairs lead up to the third floor where, in the former grenier, there are two enormous light-filled bedrooms, with big Velux windows and all the magnificent roof timbers of the building on show. There is also a toilet with wash hand basin at this level. The thick stone walls keep the building cool in summer and hold the heat in winter.

The garden has both shady and sunny areas – the 'island' between the two waterfalls for shady meals on hot days for example, contrasting with the sunny area around the pool. It is a haven for wild-life - families of ducks have been born here, we regularly see moorhens and the occasional blue flash of a kingfisher. The swimming pool has a retractable cover, which retains heat and protects it from leaves etc. The timber building beside the pool, built in traditional local style with small roof tiles (like the mill), houses the pool mechanism, but can also be a sheltered place to change, have dinner, watch the swimmers or just laze.
The mill lade runs all the way through the garden, meaning that one is never far from the sight or sound of water. As well as the mature trees which give both shade and privacy, the garden is planted with fruit trees, and there is also a vegetable garden.
Adjacent to the house there is a two-storey, stone-built 'garage', which would make a good gite, or a maison d'amis. If this building was converted we are sure you would have no shortage of guests wishing to enjoy this beautiful environment. This would be a perfect opportunity for someone wishing to relocate to France and desiring an income.

The village of Reignac-sur-Indre, in addition to having its own chateau, now a 4-star hotel, and a church with an XIth century tower, has a good selection of essential shops – butcher, baker, (no candlemaker as far as we know), Post Office, chemist, doctors' surgery, bar/newspaper shop and café. A very small market takes place on Sunday mornings, where in the winter months an oyster seller comes from Brittany to sell fresh oysters, but for a really good, well-stocked one (Wednesdays and Saturdays) you need to go to Loches (20 minutes drive). which is a spectacularly beautiful town, with the River Indre running through it, built of white tufa stone with steep slated roofs. In the oldest part, perched on a high rocky mound and reached through a formidable stone gateway, are the ancient stone 'donjon', a turreted chateau - the Logis Royal (Joan of Arc passed here), and the church of Saint Ours, with its pyramidal spires, which houses the tomb sculpture of Agnes Sorèl, France's first 'official' royal mistress.
There are plenty of shops, a cinema, galleries and concerts, as well as activities for children, canoeing etc. The River Indre flows into the Loire south of Tours which is a great city – big enough to have everything but not so big as to be overwhelming – a university town with plenty of cultural events as well as shopping and a marvellous flower market. The Cathedral of Saint Gatien is well worth a visit, as is the Musée des Beaux Arts. The wines of the area include the deliciously fruity (raspberries, seemingly) Saint Nicholas de Bourgeil and sparkling Vouvray.

Furthermore the property is within easy reach of Paris in just 55 minutes by TGV, and an hour and 20 minutes from London Stansted with Ryan air.

We feel that words simply do not do this fantastic property justice and it really must be viewed to be fully appreciated. We are sure you will fall in love with it as we have, please contact us to arrange to meet the owner and view the property or to receive floor plans and a link to the owner's own website, we are happy to assist you.
